October 17, 2018 Events, Neis

More than 50 members of the NEIS network converged on the Crowne Plaza Coogee Beach on the 8th and 9th October for the 2018 NEIS Awards Dinner and the NEIS Development Forum. Managers, trainers, mentors and administrative staff from NEIS providers around Australia together with representatives from the Department of Jobs and Small Business had the opportunity to catch up with colleagues, share experiences and plan for the NEIS program.

The NEIS Awards Dinner, deftly MC’d by NNA board member Phillip Kemp, recognised the outstanding successes of small businesses established with assistance from the NEIS program. The NNA Board was thrilled to welcome the Hon. Kelly O’Dwyer MP, Minister for Jobs and Industrial Relations, Minister for Women, to speak and to present the awards with Reg Eustace, Executive Officer of the NNA.

Congratulations to the winners, selected from over 30 nominations received from NNA members. You can read the winner’s nomination summaries in our finalists post.

The Awards evening was followed the next day by the NEIS Development Forum, a joint effort of the National NEIS Association and the Department of Jobs and Small Business. A full day of facilitated professional development and networking was undertaken. Attendees participated in workshops and shared their thoughts, ideas and knowledge; all contributing to the improvement and growth of NEIS.

Attendees at the Forum looked at a range of NNA initiatives and programs including updates from each of the NNA partners National Australia Bank and BizCover; and a presentation by Nakita Sharpe, NEIS Director, Youth and Programs Branch, Department of Jobs and Small Business; and Jodie Wearne, Branch Manager of the Incentives and Investments Branch in the Department of Jobs and Small Business.

Ivan Neville, Branch Manager Labour Market Research and Analysis Branch, Department of Jobs and Small Business presented an overview of the Australian labour market; and an update on marketing and social media for NEIS was presented by Saskia Ericson

Attendees enjoyed a presentation from Bruce Buchanon, long-term NEIS provider and board member of the National NEIS Association. Bruce began delivering NEIS training and mentoring for BEC in 1996 through the then CES (Commonwealth Employment Service). He has trained more than 1750 participants in his time with NEIS and averaged an 82% success rate of participants not returning to Centrelink benefits. With more than 30 years experience in helping small businesses achieve their goals; Bruce’s qualifications, experience and achievements on both a regional and national level are exemplary. We wish Bruce every success in his new role as Executive Officer of St Vincent de Paul for the Western Region.

The NNA would like to thank everyone involved in the organisation of this year’s NEIS Awards Dinner and Development Forum, including our forum facilitators Meld, our speakers and presenters; and our photographer Brendan McMullan, himself a NEIS alumni. Feedback has been extremely positive and we’re already looking forward to the 2019 event. Onward and upward!
